Growing sustainably in challenging insurance sectors is never easy. However, a summit in Ivory Coast this November aims to take words into action and make a difference to the agricultural, health and motor insurance sectors.
It will aim to build capital resilience, strategic solvency and capital adequacy frameworks for sustainable growth across those three areas, with the help of senior insurance players, government leaders and insurance regulators.
The third Kenya Re summit is heading to Abidjan in a deliberate act of commercial diplomacy. Abidjan is the financial gateway to Francophone West Africa, one of the world’s fastest-growing insurance frontiers and home to Kenya Re’s West Africa subsidiary. The Summit enjoys the active support of the Kenyan Embassy in Abidjan, which is mobilising ministerial, diplomatic and development-partner participation at the highest levels. For delegates, the opportunity is singular; a bridge between CIMA-region markets and the Anglophone insurance community, connecting capital, expertise and partnership across Africa’s linguistic and regulatory frontiers.
As Kenya Re explains “African insurance has grown in volume; the 2026 Summit is about growing in value.”
In terms of agriculture, the need exists to close the protection gap through index-based products, satellite and AI-driven underwriting, climate-risk solutions and blended public-private capacity for the farmers who feed the continent, while for health insurance, the need is to build sustainable health insurance — confronting medical inflation, fraud and claims leakage while expanding access, digital health platforms and universal coverage partnerships.
Finally, in terms of motor, it is all about restoring profitability to Africa’s largest retail line — telematics and data-driven pricing, fraud analytics, regulatory reform and regional knowledge exchange on what works.
Kenya Re said “The Summit is designed as a platform for action, not ceremony; concrete business partnerships and treaty relationships; a shared executive agenda for profitable growth in agriculture, health and motor lines; strengthened Anglophone–Francophone market integration; and an Abidjan communiqué capturing commitments that Kenya Re and partners will track through to the 4th Summit.”
Among the key questions to be addressed will be: with loss ratios in agricultural insurance spiking due to climate volatility, motor insurance due to fraud and health claims rising post-pandemic, how are companies restructuring capital allocation models to sustain profitability across all three lines simultaneously?
Many African insurers operate below optimal solvency thresholds, so the summit will ask what innovative capital-raising mechanisms, including catastrophe bonds, blended finance or multilateral partnerships, have proven effective in strengthening balance sheets without compromising growth?
In motor insurance, where premium undercutting is chronic, it will consider how insurers enforce underwriting discipline at the boardroom level while remaining competitive enough to grow market share.
And finally, as reinsurers, the summit will examine how treaty structures are being redesigned to provide cedants in agriculture, health and motor with genuine capital relief while protecting profitability in volatile African markets.
