More than 50 insurance entities from across Africa have signed the Nairobi Declaration on Sustainable Insurance, as a commitment to considering ESG across their businesses.
The Nairobi Declaration was formed in April 2021 in a bid to have a united voice on climate change impact affecting the insurance sector, ahead of the COP27 conference in Egypt at the end of this year.
Its target was to have 50 insurance entities signed up before the COP 27 conference but the milestone has been surpassed during the African Insurance Organisation conference in Nairobi recently.
Those behind the Declaration are hoping that yet more insurance entities will sign up in the coming weeks to have an ever more powerful voice representing the African insurance sector. The African Insurance Organisation itself was among those to sign up and is promising to throw its weight behind the initiative.
Zillah Malia, from FSD Africa, said: “We recognise that we are all at different stages on the sustainable insurance journey but coming together to tackle the sustainability issues affecting our continent is essential in ensuring a sustainable future for our people.”
As part of the initiative, there are plans for all signatories to be invited to take part in capacity-building webinars in the coming weeks.
